So this morning as I walked in my office I found 5 bags and a small box containing (oh how I love them) glazed doughnuts.  So just to be upfront, I knew about the doughnuts yesterday.  My son was going to beat the streets of Oak Cliff looking for 6 different bakeries.  Well he did, and now I’m going to give you my expert insurance opinion on these doughnuts.  I’ve had my fare share of doughnuts and today will be no exception.  Let’s start with #6 and we’ll work down to #1.  The doughnuts are not listed in any specific order.  So who knows, maybe #5 if the best of the bunch.  Read to see.  Fyi, we paid for them so there is no favoritism other than taste.

#6 (Donuts and Coffee)

·

·         Their FB  page

·         The name of the restaurant says it all

·         They have a wide variety of donuts available as well as kolaches, fresh cinnamon rolls and muffins.

·         Donuts are quite large so you definitely get more bang for your buck in terms size

·         Fresh coffee and cold beverages available to purchase

·         One of the biggest donut restaurants we stepped in to with plenty of seating room to hang out

·         1 glazed donut was 79 cents

Critique: It is definitely the biggest doughnut.  This is the only doughnut that came in a small box which was very convenient if you're going to eat in your car.  About the size of a hamburger box from a fast food restaurant.  The other thing I noticed was it was a little wet and sticky.  But the pure size was not for me as in my mind bigger is not always better. It was however one of the freshest tasting ones.

#5 (Oak Cliff Donuts)

·         http://www.yelp.com/biz/oak-cliff-doughnuts-dallas

·         Wide variety of donuts available along with Kolaches

·         Fresh coffee and cold beverages available for purchase

·         Plenty of seating room if you’d like to sit down and enjoy your morning with a fresh cup of coffee and a hot glazed donut

·         1 glazed donut was 65 cents

Critique: I would normally say this is a pretty good doughnut but after tasting all of them I would say it was average
.

#4 (Southern Maid Donuts)

·         http://www.yelp.com/biz/southern-maid-donuts-dallas-3

·         Drive thru that is very convenient as well as walk up service

·         While they offer many kinds of donuts, they also offer breakfast sandwiches, kolaches and tacos

·         1 glad donut was 70 cents

Critique: It was a lot like #3 but it had an overly sweet after taste, strange.  I can still taste it.  Maybe it’s a little too sweet.

#3 (Royal Donuts)

·         http://www.yelp.com/biz/royal-donuts-dallas

·         Variety of donuts available

·         Fresh coffee and cold beverages available for purchase

·         Restaurant was clean inside

·         1 glazed donut was 65 cents

Critique: I like the taste of this doughnut.  It was a little smaller but it looked and tasted fresher than most others.  It was a little sweeter than most in the group as well.  Also, the glaze was shinier which for some reason just made it more appealing to me visually.

#2 (Delightful Donuts)

·         http://www.yelp.com/biz/delightful-donut-shop-dallas

·         Not the biggest variety of donuts available

·         The gentlemen running the restaurant was very nice

·         1 glazed donut was 59 cents

Critique: A doughnut of average size and consistency, its big moment was the texture.  Nice looking doughnut.  Not a bad taste but nothing else stood out about this one.

#1 (Donuts)

·         4344 S Hampton Rd, Dallas, TX 75232

·         Fresh coffee available inside along with a fridge that holds a few different sodas, chocolate/regular milk and energy drinks

·         Service was quick and the restaurant was clean

·         Variety of donuts offered along with kolaches

·         1 glazed donut was 60 cents

Critique: This was the first doughnut I tasted in the morning.  I’m not sure if it was me knowing I had to taste 5 other doughnuts or what but it was just OK.  I took a taste, put it back in the bag and moved on.  Maybe I was just being critical because I knew I was going to be tasting a lot of other doughnuts.  Either way, that one didn’t stop me from moving to the next.  Overall, could be better.

All in all not a bad start for the morning, I got to eat doughnuts.  Here are the ratings by the numbers:

                Taste                     Texture                                Freshness                           Notes

#6.          8.0                          6.0                          8.0                               Too Big

#5           7.0                          7.0                          8.0                               Average taste

#4           7.0                          9.0                          9.0                               A little sweeter than I like

#3           8.5                          9.0                          9.0

#2           7.5                          8.0                          7.0

#1           6.0                          5.0                          5.0

The clear winner to me was #3.  Now that was a good doughnut.  Please watch for me next time when I’ll give you my expert insurance experience on something else.

Always trying to stay local,

David (Big Red) Gorman
