people in new carCars aren’t just a set of wheels anymore. Rather, car manufacturers are competing with high tech computer systems and features. But do you really need all the bells and whistles? Air conditioned seats may be nice, but they’re not as important as safety features. Let’s take a look at five relatively new features that you should consider when shopping for a new car.

Keyless entry: Fumbling for keys in a dark parking lot can spell danger in an instant. However, a car with a smart key allows you enter your car immediately while your key remains safely in your pocket or purse. Better yet, this eliminates the old problem of locking your keys in the car. Keyless entry provides both convenience—with push start ignition—and security—by making it very difficult to hotwire an equipped car.

Air bags: Front air bags have been around for many years and are now required in all new cars. But many car models come standard with a host of additional air bags, including side air bags, dashboard air bags and inflatable seatbelts. Cars with numerous air bags are often safer models, which make great options for families.

Rearview camera: Navigating while backing up can be tricky and it only takes a second to run into a child, pet or object. Rearview cameras do not replace your vision and best judgment, but they’re valuable tools that have helped reduce the number of accidents while reversing.

Blind spot monitoring: Have you ever had a close call with a driver in your blind spot while changing lanes? Blind spot monitoring systems are designed to alert you if you begin moving into the path of another vehicle. This is often signaled by lights on the side mirrors.

Electronic stability control: This feature uses computers to analyze your traction and steering, braking or adjusting the throttle response as needed if danger is sensed. Electronic stability control is especially important during bouts of bad weather. Luckily, the feature is now required in all new cars.
